CFRC, 101.9 FM in Kingston, Ontario

This morning I turned the radio on to my regular dial (101.9 FM) and pulled back in revolt: “UHG! What the hell is comming out of my speakers???” Let’s face it, this is the kind of reaction that a regular campus radio listener experiences as par-for-the-course at least a few times a week. I’m pointing this out in order to emphasize that this is the first time since I started listening, four and half months ago, that I’ve experienced this with CFRC. And as I sit here listening a few hours later (with Skinny Puppy now crawling out of the speakers) I am reassured and heart-warmingly flushed-cheeked to know that all is still well in my own radio city. Right now I’m a little partial to the electronic shows (When the Dog Bites, When the Bee Stings, Acid Base Reflux, Lola’s Lounge, and Rinse Out Radio), but the broad scope of CFRC is refreshingly unpretensious and downright fun. Plus it’s a good thing to know for the networking possibilities – they sponsor and promote numerous shows and events around town. When I’m home, I listen to it constantly. CFRC makes you think you are the only one listening. The dj’s make you feel like they are talking right into your own ear. Like they can hear you listening back at them. Like this is your own private city pumping directly into your own private apartment. There’s a reason for the trust that comes with listening to one of the oldest radio stations in the world. It’s like CFRC knows what I need before I do. Except for this morning – well, everyone fights now and then.
